Kaha:wi Dance Theatre - Medicine Bear

October 24-26, 2012

A multi-media dance experience Medicine Bear interweaves two stories about the gift and knowledge of traditional medicines to the Iroquois people. Medicine Bear is a dance theatre work for young audiences and weaves into one narrative two traditional Iroquoian stories: how the Bear Clan became known as the “Keeper of the Medicines” and the story of the hunter who discovered the gift of medicines. Medicine Bear shares lessons of respect, spirit, compassion for elders, as well as giving thanks.

Choreographer Santee Smith recalls these stories and is enthusiastic to share them with youth, “My father told me these two powerful and cultural narratives when I was growing up. Providing the opportunity for traditional stories to find relevance within today’s youth population is important to me, especially at this time of ecological crisis.”
