The Algoma Fall Festival in partnership with The Art Gallery of Algoma proudly presents Shirley, An Indian Residential School Story, a powerful visual arts exhibition that brings Shirley Horn's true story to life through the original illustrations and narrative from the acclaimed book by Shirley Horn and Joanne Robertson.
At just five years old, Shirley was taken from her family and sent to residential school. Through expressive artwork and Shirley's own words, visitors journey alongside her, leaving her home for the schools, through the pain of separation and loss, to the resilience, hope, and strength that carried her forward. Each image becomes a voice, each story a gift shared with future generations.
This moving exhibition reflects the spirit of Maada'ookiidaa by creating a space for truth-telling, listening, and learning. It honours the experiences of Residential School Survivors while inviting visitors to engage in meaningful conversations about healing, reconciliation, and the enduring strength of Indigenous families and communities.
Beautifully illustrated and deeply personal, Shirley, An Indian Residential School Story is more than an exhibition. It is an opportunity to witness one survivor's journey, to share in her story, and to better understand our collective responsibility to walk the path toward truth, reconciliation and healing.

L’histoire d’un pensionnat pour autochtones
Le festival Algoma Fall , en partenariat avec l’Art Gallery of Algoma, est fier de présenter Shirley : L’histoire d’un pensionnat pour autochtones, une exposition d’arts visuels percutante qui donne vie à l’histoire vécue de Shirley Horn grâce aux illustrations originales et au récit tirés de l’ouvrage acclamé de Shirley Horn et Joanne Robertson.
À l'âge de cinq ans seulement, Shirley a été arrachée à sa famille et envoyée dans un pensionnat autochtone. À travers des œuvres expressives et ses propres mots, les visiteurs cheminent à ses côtés : du départ du foyer familial vers le pensionnat– de la douleur de la séparation et de la perte jusqu'à la résilience, l'espoir et la force qui l’ont soutenue. Chaque image devient une voix, chaque récit un cadeau partagé avec les générations futures.
Cette exposition émouvante reflète l’esprit de «Maada’ookiidaa» en créant un espace propice à la vérité, à l’écoute et à l’apprentissage. Elle rend hommage au vécu des survivants des pensionnats autochtones tout en invitant les visiteurs à prendre part à des échanges significatifs sur la guérison, la réconciliation et la force inébranlable des familles et des communautés autochtones.
Magnifiquement illustrée et profondément personnelle, l’exposition Shirley, An Indian Residential School Story est bien plus qu’une simple exposition. C’est l’occasion de découvrir le parcours d’une survivante, de partager son histoire et de mieux comprendre notre responsabilité collective d’avancer sur la voie de la vérité, de la réconciliation et de la guérison.
